Sandro Tonali’s agent has shed some light on how difficult it was for the midfielder to leave his boyhood club AC Milan.

Tonali became a club-record £100m signing for Tottenham a few weeks ago, joining from Newcastle United. It’s been over three years now since he left for England, much to the dismay of fans who believed Milan had found a legend they could hold on to for a long time.

A lot of time has passed since that summer but it remains a hot topic for those who follow Milan, especially because there will probably be talk of a return to the Rossoneri until it materialises or until he retires, whichever comes first.

The subject was recently brought up again by the player’s agent, Beppe Riso. He spoke on the Colpi da Maestro podcast about Tonali’s transfer from Milan to Newcastle, with his words relayed by MilanNews.

“We had the feeling that Milan was different. I know Milan well, and it didn’t give me the feeling of the historic Milan. Speaking with Sandro, we discussed moving to the Premier League, it was a challenge that fascinated him,” he said.

“He had the courage because he was one of the most important players and had won a Scudetto. He had the courage to leave, he was a visionary. Was it difficult? Very difficult for him, extremely difficult. In the first few weeks, I saw him sad, but then he took the measure and imposed himself as always.”
