Inter vs Monza Match Preview

Inter begin their 2026–27 Serie A campaign against newly promoted Monza at the San Siro on Saturday, August 22, with kick-off at 17:30 BST (18:30 CEST).

The Nerazzurri enter the new campaign as defending Serie A champions after winning the Scudetto last season under Cristian Chivu. Inter also lifted the Coppa Italia, giving Chivu a domestic double in his first season in charge. The champions remain the early favourites to retain the title despite significant changes to the squad over the summer.

Inter have refreshed their squad with several major additions, including John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Djed Spence and are expected to bring in Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, according to various reports. The club have also moved on from a number of experienced players as Chivu looks to combine the team’s established core with a younger, more athletic group.

The champions will be expected to start strongly at home, although the opening fixture comes with some uncertainty as several players have only recently returned to the squad following the 2026 World Cup.

Monza, meanwhile, return to Serie A and immediately face one of the most difficult tests in Italian football. Ivan Jurić has taken charge and will attempt to make the newly promoted side competitive through an aggressive and disciplined approach.

Monza will have to defend well and remain compact, but they could cause problems if they are able to win possession and attack quickly in transition.

Inter should dominate possession and territory, while Monza’s best opportunity is likely to come from counterattacking situations.

Inter Team News and Key Players

  • Henrikh Mkhitaryan is unavailable through suspension.

  • Inter have otherwise been able to prepare for the opener with their main squad.

  • Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram are expected to lead the attack.

  • John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Djed Spence are among the major summer additions.

  • Chivu is expected to continue with his successful 3-5-2 system.

  • Josep Martínez is expected to take over as Inter’s first-choice goalkeeper following Yann Sommer’s departure.

  • Djed Spence is expected to provide attacking width from the right following Denzel Dumfries’ departure.

Potential starting XI: Josep Martínez; John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Alessandro Bastoni; Djed Spence, Nicolò Barella, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Petar Sučić, Federico Dimarco; Lautaro Martínez, Marcus Thuram.

Lautaro Martínez is the obvious player to watch after another hugely productive season for Inter. The Argentine remains the focal point of the champions’ attack and will be expected to lead the line as Inter begin their title defence. Marcus Thuram is another major threat for Monza. His pace and physicality could cause problems for a newly promoted defence, particularly if Inter are able to move the ball quickly into the final third. Djed Spence could also make his competitive Inter debut.

The English wing-back has arrived to provide an attacking option on the right and is expected to play an important role in Chivu’s system. John Stones is another player attracting attention. The England international is part of Inter’s defensive rebuild and could immediately become an important figure in the back three.

Monza Team News and Key Players

  • Ivan Jurić takes charge of Monza for their return to Serie A.

  • Matteo Pessina is unavailable through injury.

  • Patrick Cutrone is expected to provide an important attacking presence.

  • Andrea Colpani will be one of Monza’s main creative players.

  • Monza are expected to use a three-man defensive structure.

  • Jurić is likely to ask his side to press aggressively and attack quickly when possession is regained.

Potential starting XI: Demba Thiam; Luca Ravanelli, Filippo Delli Carri, Lorenzo Lucchesi; Adam Bakoune, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, Foe Ondoa, Samuele Birindelli; Andrea Colpani, Gaetano Oristanio; Patrick Cutrone.

Patrick Cutrone is the obvious player to watch for Monza. The striker’s Serie A experience could prove valuable in a match where chances are likely to be limited. Andrea Colpani is another potential difference-maker. His ability to carry the ball and create chances between the lines could give Monza a route through an Inter defence that is likely to push high up the pitch.

Pessina’s absence is particularly significant. His experience and leadership would have been useful against the defending champions, leaving Jurić with an important midfield decision to make. Monza’s best chance of getting a result will be to stay compact, frustrate Inter and make the most of any counterattacking opportunities.

Previous Head to Heads

  • Inter have won three of the seven previous Serie A meetings between the sides, while Monza have won one and three have ended in draws.

  • Monza recorded a memorable 1-0 victory at San Siro in April 2023.

  • Inter responded with a 2-0 victory in the return meeting later that year.

  • Inter won 5-1 at Monza in January 2024.

  • The most recent Serie A meeting between the sides ended in a 3-2 Inter victory in March 2025.

  • Inter have therefore scored freely in several of the recent meetings, although Monza have shown they are capable of making the matchup competitive.

Score Prediction: Inter 2-0 Monza

Monza’s return to Serie A is a major occasion, but they could hardly have been handed a more difficult opening fixture. Inter have the stronger squad, home advantage and the experience of defending a Serie A title. The champions should control possession and create the majority of the chances, while Monza will probably look to defend compactly and attack on the counter.

The visitors have enough quality to make the opening stages uncomfortable for Inter, particularly if they can frustrate the hosts and prevent the midfield from controlling the game. However, Inter’s attacking quality should eventually make the difference. Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram provide a formidable partnership, while Barella, Çalhanoğlu and Dimarco give Chivu plenty of options to create chances. Inter should therefore begin their title defence with three points, although Monza could keep the scoreline respectable.
