Pochettino confirms Milan’s summer interest but claims he ‘always closed the door’

Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that he was ‘not available’ to talk to interested clubs in the summer, but seemed to confirm AC Milan’s interest.

Milan made the decision to radically overhaul the management in the summer after the final game of the season saw Massimiliano Allegri, Igli Tare, Geoffrey Moncada and Giorgio Furlani all sacked in a clean sweep.

Various candidates were linked for the head coach role, and The Athletic reported that the Rossoneri had sent their people to Georgia for a discussion with Pochettino just before the World Cup. In the end nothing came of it, and Ruben Amorim was the man eventually chosen.

Pochettino gave an interview to Sky Sports in which he also spoke about the opportunity he had this summer to become a club manager once again, and he certainly didn’t deny that the chance was there.

What about some of those other jobs – at one point AC Milan looked like a possible destination…

“We were not open during the World Cup to talk with different clubs that were interested.”

But were there clubs interested?

“Yes, always. Yes, always have different, you know, options.”

“We never gave the opportunity to be close. We always closed the door before it got close.”
