Official: Monza buy Zeballos from Boca Juniors, leaving 40 per cent sale clause

Monza have officially purchased Exequiel Zeballos in an unusual deal worth €4m, leaving a 40 per cent sell-on clause to Boca Juniors, after he had been targeted by Napoli.

The wide striker had been a confirmed target for Napoli, with the player seemingly agreeing personal terms and refusing to sign a new contract in Argentina to push through the transfer.

However, the club remained steadfast and refused the proposals from Napoli that were never beyond €10m for full ownership.

Zeballos has joined Monza

Instead, with his contract set to expire on December 31, Boca Juniors have completed the sale to Serie A minnows Monza.

It is reported the fee is just €4m, but crucially Boca Juniors will retain 40 per cent of the future sale, so it is almost a co-ownership deal.

Zeballos has signed a contract with Monza to June 2030.

The 24-year-old was a product of the Boca Juniors youth academy and made the permanent step up to the senior side in 2020.

He leaves after scoring 16 goals with 16 assists in 140 competitive games for the club.
