McTominay Might Leave Napoli at the End of the Season
Scott McTominay is nearing his return after dealing with arrhythmia, but the next few months could be his last at Napoli. The star midfielder is due for a new contract, but the parties are far apart in the talks, Tuttomercatoweb reports.
The Scot is currently asking for around €8M per year, leaning on the fact that he’s been Serie A’s best midfielder since moving to the Azzurri. The club hasn’t tendered an offer yet, but it hasn’t handed out a salary that high since Victor Osimhen was in town. They tightened their purse strings last summer, both on fees and wages.
Napoli will ponder whether to make an almost unprecedented effort to retain McTominay during the season. Otherwise, he’ll inevitably be put on the market next summer to avoid losing leverage. His short-term contract and age, as he’ll turn 30, will cap his price tag at about €25/30M.
The ace recently admitted it’d be tough to ignore José Mourinho’s possible call. His former team, Manchester United, and Aston Villa are also among the early contenders to snap him up.
In the meantime, he’ll undergo the mandatory physical to be cleared to return after a pulsed field ablation on Tuesday.
Our Take on Napoli and McTominay
It’s early for the situation to be decided already, but, if those are indeed his demands, the Partenopei will be at a crossroads. Raising the bar salary-wise always has big ramifications. Hiring Massimiliano Allegri was conducive to a stingier era after spending big, and not always appropriately, to please Antonio Conte. The suitors will flock if he’ll be gettable. It’ll eventually be interesting to see whether other Serie A giants will have a shot, or if the Partenopei will understandably talk only with foreign sides.
