Jonathan David scores again as Juventus fans fear another Douglas Luiz situation

Jonathan David is enjoying one of the best runs of his career, and it is happening six weeks after Juventus decided they had seen enough.

As noted by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Canadian has now scored in four consecutive matches after finding the net for Canada against Chile, adding to goals for Atletico Madrid against Real Sociedad, Osasuna and Real Madrid.

It is a rare feat for him. David has managed three games in a row on several occasions, but four has only happened twice before: in February 2020 at Genk, when he scored seven across four matches, and between September and October 2022 at Lille, when he managed five.

Spalletti drove the decision to move David on

The verdict at Juventus came largely from Luciano Spalletti, who spent months trying to get a response and never got one. The coach wanted an out-and-out number nine, and David’s profile suited a second striker role instead. With the mood around him turning hostile, he left at the end of the window, against his own wish to stay and put right a poor first season.

Juventus point to what they gained: they shed one of the squad’s biggest salaries, level with Kenan Yildiz’s post-renewal deal, and kept Nico Gonzalez, who has since impressed upon his return.

Some supporters are less convinced, fearing a repeat of Gonzalez and Douglas Luiz, players written off after one season who then rediscovered themselves.
