“I’m a Milan player” – Athekame confirms he would ‘like to return’ after Lyon loan

Zachary Athekame has had a brilliant start to the season with Lyon, but has admitted he sees his future with AC Milan.

Of the seven players Milan loaned out last summer, Athekame is undoubtedly the one the club still have the highest hopes for, alongside David Odogu. The Swiss full-back turns 22 in December and clearly improved over time in his first year in Serie A. Despite this, given the return of Samuel Chukwueze, he was loaned out this season. There was no option to buy included, a sign that the Rossoneri intended only to let him go so he could develop. At Lyon, he has two goals and two assists in six games under Paulo Fonseca.

While away on international duty, the former Young Boys defender gave an interview to RSI in which he spoke about his start to the campaign and where he sees his future. MilanNews relayed his comments.

“I rate my first season with AC Milan positively. I enjoyed it, it was a new, more tactical league. Then there was the change in management, I spoke with the new coach and decided to change shirts. I enjoyed my time in Milan. I’m a Milan player. Now I’m at Lyon, but I’d like to return,” he said.
