Gila explains why he rejected Inter and Napoli in the summer: “Help Milan get back”

Mario Gila has explained why he opted to reject clubs like Inter and Napoli, despite concrete interest, to join AC Milan in the summer.

Gila was Milan’s first signing of the summer window, reaching an agreement with Lazio at the beginning of July. Just a few weeks earlier, the Spaniard appeared destined to join Napoli, but the Partenopei needed to sell before they could close the deal and thus missed out.

In hindsight, the Rossoneri did really well to pounce on Napoli’s delay as Gila has been a crucial player so far this season. He has quickly become a fan favourite as well, which is never a bad thing to get the enthusiasm going.

Gila provides the best answer

Speaking at the Festival dello Sport earlier this evening, sharing his thoughts on several topics, the centre-back explained why he opted for Milan and not any of the other clubs that expressed an interest. His answer is certainly commendable.

Were other big Italian clubs interested in you? Napoli, Atalanta, Inter? You chose Milan…

“There were several teams, but I chose Milan because they’re a team that, when they call you, has such a strong history, it’s hard to say no. Maybe other clubs are in a more satisfying moment, but helping Milan get back to winning ways is something you can’t find anywhere else.”

Did Inter also contact you?

“Yes.”

Why did you choose Milan?

“We know that Milan hasn’t been at the same level as Inter or Napoli in recent years. But playing for a team like that and trying to help them win would be a much greater satisfaction than playing for a team that’s already winning.”
