GdS: The ‘new Amorim’ – why a 4-2-3-1 is Milan’s next evolution

Ruben Amorim has regularly admitted that he has made mistakes in the past – maybe even some with AC Milan already – and he is looking to change them.

Amorim knows that he is not without flaws. His time at Manchester United was full of them and he is keen to ensure that the same mistakes are not made during his time at Milan. Of course, mistakes can be made.

Yet, it’s what follows that really matters. Before the international break, the Portuguese already began to implement new ideas and now that could be packaged as him being a ‘new’ version of himself, as Gazzetta dello Sport writes this morning, seen below.

Amorim’s new idea

It is suggested that a three-man defence can be changed into a back four, with Mario Gila being key to the idea – who’d have thought, given how the season started. With this, Pervis Estupinan would drop into left-back and this would free up the attack.

Samuel Chukwueze’s defensive role would be less important and the positives were seen against Lecce before the break kicked off. Amorim, as the report states, has also made it clear that this wouldn’t be a one-off.

It wouldn’t be a cover-up, but a chance to attack more, even if the formation seems more defensive. In reality, the 4-2-3-1 – as it would become – would give attacking freedom to the front line. So, there would be a less fluid structure, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
