GdS: Milan thrilled as Ramos uses international break to revive his goalscoring
For Goncalo Ramos, the international break has been just the revival he was looking for on the goalscoring front, and AC Milan are now eager to have him back.
As highlighted by today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (see image at the bottom), Ramos has scored more during the international break than in the rest of the season. One goal against Norway and one goal against Denmark, as opposed to the single goal against Venezia.
For the national team, Ramos’ tally is now at 13 goals after 30 games, which is a good average for a striker. Furthermore, with the goal scored against Denmark, he reached a very important career milestone: 100 goals between club and country.
Starting spot cemented
There hasn’t exactly been a lack of media attention for the Portuguese national team in the last week, with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving the camp. The new head coach, Jorge Jesus, wanted Ramos as the lone striker and that didn’t leave any space for the No.7.
Clearly, given how things have developed, Ramos has only solidified his position up front. The fans may have differing opinions on how the Ronaldo case has been handled, but on the pitch, the Milan striker has united them with his performances.
In the 4-2 win against Denmark, he not only got a goal but also assisted Joao Cancelo, hit the post and created many chances.
“External issues don’t affect us. We are already thinking about the next match and that’s enough for our team. Of course, it’s always nice to score, contribute, and provide an assist, but the most important thing is the win. I’m obviously happy to cement my position within the team,” Ramos said.
Excellent form for Milan return
At Milan, the situation has obviously been very different. Even though he only just arrived at the club, he didn’t need to prove himself on the pitch to get the starting spot. Ruben Amorim has full faith in him and has made that clear since the start.
That said, Milan (and especially Amorim) have watched his international break performances with great joy and are now eager to have him back at Milanello. If he can continue his excellent form, then things will get a lot easier for the Rossoneri as well.
After all, the goalscoring tally has to be upped in the coming weeks for Milan to feel that the €74m investment was truly worth it. One goal against Venezia doesn’t cut it, even if the striker has helped create a lot of chances.
Of course, as also stated by Amorim, the lack of goals hasn’t only been his fault. After the break, one of Milan’s main goals is to create more chances, with more crosses and constantly looking for runs in behind. Ramos, with his excellent form, could thrive.
