Contacts, vision, squad relations: Why AC Milan are still missing a crucial figure

AC Milan went into the summer with a ‘new’ management after the clear-out late in May, but is the current structure sustainable?

The decision by Gerry Cardinale to sack CEO Giorgio Furlani, head coach Massimiliano Allegri, sporting director Igli Tare and the chief scout Geoffrey Moncada after the final game of 2025-26 signalled a total change in course.

Ruben Amorim arrived as Allegri’s replacement and this was a surprise to some: normally a new director is appointed who sets the over-arching vision, then appointing the staff around him and a new head coach to fit the vision.

Unusually this summer it seemed as though Amorim was appointed under the presumption Markus Krösche would follow as the new Director of Football, leaving Eintracht Frankfurt. The Bundesliga side didn’t let him go, which frustrated the Portuguese to the extent he almost walked away.

Instead of going for another target, Cardinale entrusted the sporting area to internal promotions, Hendrik Almstadt and Bobby Gardiner above all. Amorim – partly to appease him – was also given more powers.
