Chivu’s Inter Plan Starts With Small Steps, Not Guarantees
Christian Chivu says he wants to build something lasting at Inter and leave a mark on the club’s history, with Champions League success an ambition but no outcome he believes can be guaranteed.
Speaking to Futnet in an interview about his life as a player, youth coach and Inter manager, Chivu described winning the Champions League as a shared dream. However, he stressed that neither money nor ideas can buy the trophy, and that success depends on many factors coming together during a season.
Chivu believes a team’s prospects become clearer around March. Paper favourites may be easy to identify, he explained, but predicting who will go all the way is far less straightforward. His own approach is to work towards short-term objectives, taking small steps that can eventually make bigger ambitions possible.
That method is reflected in the footballing identity Chivu is shaping at Inter. He said he wants his players to maintain their energy and intensity while improving each day, himself included.
Chivu’s Inter vision is built on responsibility
Chivu also pointed to responsibility and emotional intelligence as important qualities for a captain, with excessive ego a potential obstacle. He recalled giving Pio Esposito the armband and said the young forward responded well. Esposito, he added, showed courage by leaving the Primavera for Serie B, where he had to prove himself among senior professionals rather than choose the easier option of staying in the youth setup.
Chivu’s perspective on European football is shaped by his own playing experience. He recalled returning from surgery after two and a half months before helping his team win the league, Coppa Italia and Champions League. He said he did not fully celebrate that Treble, as he felt responsible for returning to the national team as captain.
His stated priority at Inter is therefore not a single-season outcome, but steady progress: achievable goals, daily improvement and a project that can endure.
