The Hoops pursued the Lithuania international during the summer transfer window, but a deal failed to materialise after Celtic and Torino were unable to reach an agreement over the midfielder’s valuation.

Gineitis has remained an important figure in Turin since the window closed, starting each of Torino’s opening four Serie A matches.

However, his latest appearance was cut short after just 45 minutes with Torino trailing Roma 1-0.

According to ToroNews, manager Ignazio Abate left Gineitis in the changing room at the interval and replaced him with Daniel Bragança.

The Portuguese midfielder is already familiar to Celtic supporters, having scored twice for Sporting CP in a pre-season friendly against Martin O’Neill’s side earlier this summer.

Bragança subsequently joined Torino, with his arrival coming amid expectations that Gineitis could depart the Serie A club.

Roma went on to secure victory with Niccolò Pisilli adding their second goal in the 93rd minute.

O’Neill confirmed after the transfer window that he had been keen on bringing Gineitis to Celtic, but the clubs were ultimately unable to agree on a fee.
