“Best thing was to leave Milan” – Athekame reveals Amorim’s advice before Lyon loan
Before leaving for Lyon, AC Milan head coach Ruben Amorim offered some advice to Zachary Athekame for the upcoming year.
Athekame has completely taken off in France this year. He’d shown signs of quality in moments last season, but he was never really given a chance by Massimiliano Allegri. With space limited in the squad this season too, Amorim opted to loan the youngster out.
It’s clear that this was the right decision as well. At Milan, the wing-back spots are very confusing and there’s no guarantee that he’d be featuring regularly. In France, though, Lyon have used him in every minute possible this season and he’s shining, scoring and assisting twice.
As a result, it seems clear that he’ll be in the squad for the Rossoneri next season. However, there are already suggestions of potential interest from abroad, so it may not be so simple.
Amorim’s advice to Athekame
With the wing-back ‘enchanting’ with Lyon, and PianetaMilan attended one of his games, interviewing him about the move and what Amorim told him before departing, as can be seen below.
“Amorim told me the best thing was to leave Milan on loan and play. He was very honest with me. I respect his decision and I hope Milan have a great season.”
