Bad news for Cagliari as Deiola undergoes knee surgery

Cagliari will be without midfielder Alessandro Deiola for a while after he was forced to undergo surgery for a knee injury.

The 31-year-old has been one of the most consistent performers for the club, who are having an excellent start to the Serie A season, sitting in fourth place on 12 points.

That is thanks to a run of four victories and only one defeat, leaving them one point adrift of joint leaders Roma, Inter and Lazio.

Cagliari lose Deiola to injury

Deiola felt a twinge in his left knee during a training session and had tests that showed a lesion to the lateral meniscus.

A statement from the club confirmed he had undergone surgery today at the San Francesco Hospital in Nuoro.

After a few days of rest, he will begin the rehabilitation process.

Deiola had started all five Cagliari games in Serie A this season, acting as midfielder or makeshift defender, and scored in the Coppa Italia too.

It is believed the player could be out of action for a couple of months.
