Ruben Amorim was asked about whether he can get his AC Milan side playing like Como. His response was as interesting as it was passionate.

Amorim was announced as Massimiliano Allegri’s heir in the summer, after a process in which the brief was apparently to try and find a Fabregas-style coach, i.e. one that focuses on possession and playing attractive football.

It would be fair to say that Como have made a mark since returning to Serie A. They qualified for the Champions League by finishing fourth last season, and then in their first game in the competition they hammered RB Leipzig 4-1 in midweek.

Amorim spoke to reporters in his pre-match press conference on the eve of the trip to the capital and he was asked if he can get his team playing like Fabregas’.

“I think we are different managers, with different backgrounds and work for different clubs. Mister Cardinale has never told me that [Como] is the inspiration, so you need to tell me, as I didn’t know,” he said.

“I have my way of playing, I think it will take time. Every manager needs time. You saw against Torino, the friendly against United, that we are improving. But if you want a team that plays like Como, you need to buy Como’s manager to play the same way.

“I’m completely different. I have my style of play, my identity. Coaching Milan is really hard; coaching Como and doing what they are doing in the Champions League is so hard, and they are doing so well, but I’m not focusing on how Como are playing; I focus on how Milan must play to win games.”
