Amorim explains tactical adjustments vs. Lecce: “I learned in Manchester”
AC Milan head coach Ruben Amorim explained the tactical tweaks that he made for the win over Lecce, recalling his time with Manchester United.
Amorim was under a bit of pressure going into Sunday night’s game at San Siro, with the midweek defeat to Benfica in the Europa League being the third game in a row his side failed to win, and with worsening performances too.
However, the response from the Rossoneri was a good one as they beat the Salento side relatively comfortably, scoring three goals without reply. Christian Pulisic ended his drought in the first half, then Adrien Rabiot and Diego Moreira scored in the second half to make it a more positive evening.
‘I learned in Manchester’
In addition to speaking to DAZN after the final whistle, Amorim was present in the press conference room at San Siro to answer questions from journalists about win number three. MilanNews transcribed his words.
Is the goal to continue like this?
“Of course. We want to dominate in every situation. We were dominated only against Juventus, and then in the first half against Lazio.
“In the future, we’ll try to be more concrete in the way we control the game. But the flow of play was better today. But it’s only three points and we have to focus on the other games.”
In Milan’s growth process, what percentage are the team at?
“You’re obsessed with where we are (laughs). We’re still at the beginning. We have a lot of things to do, but going from being a team that waits for the game to one that presses and tries to manage it takes time.”
What response are you getting from your team?
“We’re still working to be the best team. We’re learning. Today was a positive night. In the future, they’ll understand our way of playing, but we’ll have to be good at adapting and changing.”
Would you have signed for the results he’s achieved so far in the league?
“It’s not bad, but at the same time, let’s look at those games where we could have done better. Last week, it looked like we’d lost five games instead of losing them. This project takes time, and I’ll give it my all. Our intentions are always there. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t.
“After the break, we’ll have little time to prepare for matches, so I’ll use the break to study the opponents and also help my players return healthy from the breaks.”
What did the four-man defence give you this evening?
“The coaches here are very intelligent. I know they expect our way of playing. I learned in Manchester that I can’t always do the same things and expect different results. I try to help my players, and today was a good night.”
