So the Rangers have apparently overtake Celtic in squad value, fine now let’s count trophies. James Forrest has more medals that their entire squad combined…

The Scottish mainstream media, while ignoring the elephant in room surrounding the death of Rangers which has become topical due to the Manchester City scandal south of the border, have been making a lot out of the recent revelations that the latest Rangers squad has been considered to be of more financial value than that of Celtic.

At £132m, The Ibrox club have overtaken Celtic by nearly £19m as having the most valuable squad in Scotland after a 4.6% increase this summer, with Heart of Midlothian third at £22m after a 15.5% increase, but St Mirren have the biggest percentage increase at 18.6%, with Hibernian the biggest drop at 10% according to Transfermarkt.

Transfermarkt isn’t an official football body, just more of a platform that estimates the price tag of footballers, so not one that can be considered in anyway serious.

For example, the platform has the Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin rated at €15 million when the sobering truth is that not one single club would part with half that fee for the player over the summer transfer window, despite the Ibrox club offering his services to any club that was slightly interested.

Once upon a time the same platform once valued Alfredo Morelos at €15 million, so we should take any of their ‘opinions’ with a large dose of salt. Imaginary transfer valuations aren’t how you gauge the success of a football club, you can only determine that by the amount of honours won by said club.

Celtic to date have won a world record 122 major honours in the clubs unbroken 138 year history. Celtic has won 14 titles out of the last 15 and in that time have won a quadruple treble and loads of other cups including doubles in the past three seasons.

In that time the rangers have won a treble of sorts – one league title in the covid season, one Scottish Cup and one League Cup. That’s their major honours hall dating all the way back to the days of their founding father Charles Green back in 2012, which brings us back to the Manchester City scandal.

Presently as they have done for most of this century, Celtic has established themselves as the major force in Scottish football, with four out of the last six major domestic trophies having green and white ribbons wrapped upon them, whilst the Ibrox club have failed to win anything in that time.

The biggest majority of the present Celtic side have helped in that success, making them very much experienced in winning honours.

I think we can all agree that winning trophies carries more value than imaginary transfer fees calculated at a time when trophies are NOT handed out and on the back of Celtic losing three games on the bounce. It’s usually in the summer when we get these feel good stories when there are no football to be played.

Oh wait we are in a new situation at the moment when FIFA have determined that two international breaks should be combined into one meaning no domestic football for three weeks. So it’s like a mini-summer break – there’s the explanation right there.

It’s always the way that the Rangers are so much better when there’s no football to be played.

Normal service will resume next weekend.
