Baur was introduced from the bench against Serbia, becoming the 1,000th player to represent Germany’s men’s senior side in the process.

His inclusion in Klopp’s squad had initially come as something of a surprise, but the former Liverpool boss believes the Celtic midfielder has a hugely promising future.

Firstly, asked about handing out the 1,000th cap, Klopp said: “I don’t remember anymore. If someone showed me the pictures, if someone had asked me, ‘Do you remember Mika Baur like that?’ yes, I probably would probably say no, but I saw that it was true. I don’t know exactly.

“Mika Baur is simply one of those wonderful players who was simply there. I’m totally happy that we called him up. If he’s a six, eight, ten, don’t ask me. I don’t quite know yet. Incredibly clever player. Technically very good, fantastic attitude. He simply deserved it today. That’s all.

“He plays in Scotland, so he’s no pushover, let’s put it that way! Playing in Scotland, it might not be the best league in the world, but it’s the toughest! So he’s definitely taken the next step.

“I’m really looking forward to continuing to observe him, to keep an eye on him, because he looks really promising.

He added on what he told Baur: “That he can really kick a ball well. We’ve really seen now that he’s a wonderful footballer. To succeed [in Scotland] with his physical attributes and put himself through that, that’s really something special.”
