Sorensen shouldn’t be cast aside, he deserves time to prove himself at Celtic

When Oliver Sorensen arrived at the club, he was instantly seen by some as the answer to our current midfield woes…

Signed on a season long loan from Italian side Parma, it’s fair to say that the 24 year old hasn’t got off to the best of starts in a Celtic shirt.

He’s hardly impressed in his fleeting minutes in a Hoops jersey, with his poor display against Ferencvaros resulting in the Dane being hauled off at halftime, and it was enough to have seen him shunned by Martin O’Neill who didn’t even name him on the bench for the recent 1-0 home loss to the Rangers three days later.

Despite uncertainty over his own future, hopefully the Celtic manager has plans to work with Sorensen over the international break, and give him some much needed confidence to succeed at the club, as it’s evident he has the ability to make a positive impact.

The 24 year old who won 15 caps for the Danish under 21 side has proven himself in the Danish Superliga and Europe with Midtjylland, as well as experiencing a year in Serie A with Parma.

A natural box to box midfielder, Sorensen excelled in Denmark, and was an influential figure in Midtjylland’s title winning side of 2023/24, and produced some impressive performances in the Europa League which led to a €8 million move to Parma.

He very much has the qualities that the Celtic midfield requires, but perhaps just needs a confidence booster, and more importantly time to show his true worth.

Martin O’Neill is a master at working wonders with players low on confidence, and getting them to realise their full potential, so we can only hope he works his magic with the Dane to make him great in a Celtic shirt.

In my opinion Sorensen shouldn’t be shunned or cast aside due to a couple of below par performances, as he’s not alone in that aspect. He deserves the chance to fully prove himself, starting as soon as possible after the international break.
