Roy Keane has admitted the “pilot light is still on” for a potential return to management following recent speculation surrounding the Celtic job.

The former Hoops midfielder was spotted in the stands at Celtic Park last weekend as Martin O’Neill’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat to Rangers.

O’Neill subsequently revealed he would use the international break to reflect on his position after a third consecutive defeat, although the Celtic manager remains in charge and has since received public backing from chief executive Michael Nicholson.

Keane’s presence at Parkhead inevitably sparked some speculation among supporters on social media about whether the former Sunderland and Ipswich Town boss could eventually be an option for Celtic.

There has been nothing concrete to suggest Keane is being considered for the position, but the 55-year-old has now revealed that he remains tempted by the prospect of returning to the dugout.

Speaking to Micah Richards on Sky Sports, Keane said: “Strange enough, at weekends when I’m watching games, there are teams I watch and you go, ‘I think I could go in there and do a job’.

“But it’s mostly at weekends. It’s not through the week. It’s not Monday morning when I’m having my scrambled egg at the local cafe, just having a paper. Yeah, all these managers driving up and down the motorways and stresses.

“But yeah, I do. I think there’s always something there. The pilot light is still on for something.”
