Hibernian lost by a single goal in each of the last two Edinburgh derbies and they will be desperate for a change of fortune in the next installment of the fixture, which takes place at Easter Road on Thursday.

Over the course of last season there was a gulf between second-placed Hearts and their bitter rivals, Hibs, who finished three places and 23 points worse off.

But the teams have started the 2026/27 league campaign in a similar fashion with both registering two wins and a defeat from their opening three matches.

The point of difference has been their contrasting European experiences.

Hearts are through to the league phase of the Conference League after a penalty shootout success over Rapid Vienna, while Hibs were eliminated from the same competition following a 3-2 aggregate loss to Gent.

Team news

Hibernian must continue without defender Rocky Bushiri, who remains sidelined with an Achilles tendon injury. However, they have a largely healthy squad and could stick with the same side responsible for Sunday’s impressive 2-1 victory away to Dundee.

Hearts remain stretched with Craig Halkett, Ageu, Malachi Fagan-Walcott, Stephen Kingsley and Tom Renaud on the sidelines. James Wilson could spearhead the attack after scoring in three of his last four appearances.

Prediction

Hibernian bounced back after their exit from the Conference League with a superb 2-1 victory away to Dundee and they can follow up by defeating Hearts in entertaining fashion.

Hibs manager David Gray likes his team to get on the front foot and his tactics have been largely effective with six points taken from three league games.

Gray’s side took a major scalp with last month’s 2-1 victory away to Rangers and they look capable of posing problems for injury-hit Hearts, who are showing signs of fatigue after the recent hectic schedule.

Hearts came through extra-time and penalties to get the better of Rapid Vienna, but they looked leggy at the weekend when hanging on for a 2-1 triumph at home to St Johnstone.

Wouter Vrancken’s side have European football to look forward to, but they face a huge challenge to match the standards of last season and could suffer their second league loss of the campaign.
