Ayr’s interest in Donovan was reported on 19 August 2025, with Dundee also said to be circling for a loan. That single moment, according to Brown, was enough to end the Ayr move before it was finalised.
Three days after Johnston’s injury, Donovan made his senior Celtic debut from the bench against Livingston at Celtic Park. Rather than heading out on loan to sharpen his game elsewhere, he found himself thrown straight into Brendan Rodgers’ first-team plans.
From loan candidate to first-team fixture
Donovan hasn’t looked back since. Despite the defeat to Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup, he was arguably Celtic’s best player on the pitch that day, and he continued pushing for minutes under Martin O’Neill in the months that followed – a situation that echoes Reo Hatate’s own shifting first-team status once his role changed.
