Mika Baur credits Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham after Celtic breakthrough

The 22-year-old midfielder scored the only goal of the game at McDiarmid Park, arriving in the box at the right moment to secure a 1-0 victory for Martin O’Neill’s side.

It continued Celtic’s perfect start to the domestic campaign and provided Baur with a memorable moment following his summer arrival.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Baur was asked about his goalscoring contribution and said: “Really incredible.

“I think [it was] a really tough first half, but then in the second, we did really good.

“Yeah, a deserved win.”

Celtic struggled to find their rhythm during the opening 45 minutes before improving after the break, with Baur explaining the instructions the players received for the second half.

He continued: “To play more quickly; to play more clear.

“The simple passes, the deep runs that our wingers go in the one-vs-one, be present in the box… and yeah, that’s what we did.”

Baur acknowledged Celtic “sure” could have scored more given the opportunities they created, but his solitary strike was ultimately enough to secure all three points.

And the midfielder joked that Maloney and Fotheringham had been encouraging him throughout the week to make more runs into goalscoring areas.

Reflecting on his first Celtic goal, Baur continued: “Yeah, it feels so good.

“I’m maybe in a bit of a deeper position, but I still learn to go into the box all of the time. Shaun and Fozzy told me in the last week!

“So I’m happy I did, and it worked out.”
