Kieran McKenna ‘lined up’ for Celtic next year as managerial succession claim emerges
Aiden McGeady has revealed he has heard Kieran McKenna could be lined up to become Celtic manager next year.
Martin O’Neill’s future has been the subject of uncertainty since the 74-year-old admitted he would reflect on his position following Celtic’s 1-0 defeat to Rangers.
That completed a run of three consecutive losses for the Hoops, although Celtic remain top of the Premiership and chief executive Michael Nicholson has since publicly backed O’Neill.
Regardless of what O’Neill decides in the short term, Celtic will eventually have to consider their longer-term managerial succession plan.
McKenna, who is currently out of management after leaving Ipswich Town, has now emerged in the discussion after former Celtic winger McGeady passed on what he had heard. There has been no confirmation that Celtic have approached McKenna or reached any agreement with him.
Speaking on Open Goal, McGeady said: “I have heard Kieran McKenna is also lined up for next year. I heard that.
“People were saying that to me; I was like, ‘Kieran McKenna was on £6million a year at Ipswich.’”
