Hugh Keevins tips the Rangers to win the title in a canter
You’d like to think for his family’s sake, that the veteran hack Hugh Keevins isn’t much of a gambler, as he’d have lost a small fortune if it came to putting his money where his mouth is with so many pro-Rangers predictions he’s made over the years…
The old man of Scottish football ‘journalism’ has once again not been shy with his bold predictions, this time on the destination of this season’s Scottish Premiership title, and he had no qualms about stating Ibrox will be the new home of the trophy come next May.
Indeed he even claimed that Derek McInnes’ side will win it by a canter.
That’s despite Celtic being two points clear at the top of the standings, not to mention there’s another 29 games still to play, Shug is adamant that the trophy is Ibrox bound as no one in the league boasts the talent that the Ibrox club can call upon.
Remember back in September 2021 when Celtic under new manager Ange Postecoglou lost at Livingston and Keevins was making exactly the same shock-jock nonsense predictions? I think it was Jota who pointed out that titles aren’t won or lost in September.
But yet again, as far as Keevins is concerned the destination of the title is a done deal and blue ribbons should already be tied on the trophy.
Shug’s reckons that a The Rangers title win is a cert due to Celtic having cobbled together a squad of “ill fitting” players whilst descending into an internal mess that we will only recover through new ownership.
That would be the same ‘ill fitted’ players that have won six out of seven premiership matches whilst currently sitting at the top of the table, two points clear of his title favourites.
And whilst admittedly the well publicised “internal mess” is a strain on our club, it isn’t exactly a new thing, and more importantly it hasn’t stopped us from being successful in the past.
Shug also justifies his opinion on last Sunday’s “one sided” Glasgow Derby which the Rangers won 1-0. I mean, we can all agree Celtic were very poor on the day, but one game doesn’t define a campaign, and Keevins is experienced enough to know that.
It just takes one or two bad result and the pitchforks will be back out in force for serial losers McInnes and co. who have already exited European competition entirely after failing in the playoffs in both the Europa League and the third their Conference League.
Celtic has the experience and know-how of winning titles, and will improve on their form of late, you can be assured of that. Martin O’Neill will return from the international break – that came at exactly the right time for the Champions – with a new plan and will be demanding an immediate reaction from his players and coaching staff.
Writing in his Daily Record column Keevins stated: “You can say it’s a knee-jerk reaction, or simply a case of me talking through another part of my anatomy”…I thinks we can all agree that it’s the latter Hugh. Past experience has taught us just that.
