Former Rangers youngster Tom Lang drops three divisions to aid former club after Falkirk exit

Former Rangers youngster Tom Lang has dropped down to League Two to help his old club Dumbarton after leaving Falkirk following their remarkable rise to the Premiership.

The 29-year-old defender has returned to The Rock on a deal until January, with Sons’ boss Frank McKeown turning to a familiar face as he looks to strengthen his squad.

Lang began his senior career with Dumbarton back in 2017 after leaving Rangers’ youth setup, having joined the Ibrox academy from Birmingham City in 2015.

Now, almost a decade later, he is back where it all began, and has opted to drop down the divisions to help the Sons.

Back-to-back title winner

Lang arrives with a wealth of experience behind him after spells with Raith Rovers, Clyde, Dunfermline Athletic and Stranraer.

Most recently, he spent three seasons with Falkirk and played a role in their stunning back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premiership.

He was part of the Falkirk side that went unbeaten on their way to the League One title in 2024 and was subsequently named in the PFA Scotland League One Team of the Season.

Lang's time with the Bairns eventually came to an end this summer, bringing the defender back to Dumbarton.

The move represents a significant step down in terms of league level, but Lang's decision to return to his former club provides McKeown with the experienced defender he believes his squad needs.

The Dumbarton boss said: “It's no secret that I've been chasing an addition in defence, and our strategy of patience in the window has paid off by managing to secure a player of Tom's calibre.

“He's someone who has excelled at a higher level throughout his career and brings all the attributes we have been looking for.”

“First and foremost, he's an excellent defender, he's someone who is aggressive in the air – in both boxes – and brings a huge amount of experience with him.”

“At 29 he's still in his prime as a player and, after a frustrating few seasons with injury, he's got a hunger to get back playing regular football and succeed as a Dumbarton player.”

Full circle career move

When he joined Rangers' youth setup from Birmingham City in July 2015, the defender spoke openly about his ambition to break through and earn his chance in senior football.

“I am hoping to implement myself with the 20s and get a lot of games under my belt and then I will take it from there,” Lang said at the time.

“I am hoping, as every young lad is, to get his chance.”

He would eventually leave Rangers in 2017 and begin his senior career with Dumbarton before building an impressive career across the Scottish game.

Now he has chosen to return to the club where that journey began, with the Sons hoping his experience can help them push upwards in the fourth tier.
