‘Disgraceful’ – Chris Sutton takes aim at CCV and Celtic captain
Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has taken aim at two Celtic players in the wake of the 1-0 home loss to the Rangers, the club’s third successive defeat after losing at Ibrox in the Premier Sports Cup and then to Ferencvaros on the opening night of the Europa league campaign at Celtic Park…
Sutton wasn’t shy in giving his opinion on two senior Celtic players for comments made in the wake of the defeat. First up was Cameron Carter Vickers whose comments after the second derby loss according to Sutton were “disgraceful”.
“I’ve been a huge admirer of his over the years and I’ve constantly sung his praises. But his comments after the Rangers defeat were disgraceful,” Sutton stated in his weekly column in Daily Record this morning.
“Carter-Vickers spoke about the random way of playing, the messaging and stuff about freezing on the pitch because players being unsure of where they were meant to run.
“It was a cop-out. Whether he meant it or not, he was passing the buck back to the manager and the coaches – and it’s not on. It was pathetic.
“You might feel that way in private but the place to air those thoughts is in-house rather than in public. It was a tough enough situation but Carter-Vickers just chucked petrol on the flames.”
Skipper Callum McGregor was next in Sutton’s sights when it came to criticism. The Celtic captain claimed in the media in the build-up to the second derby that Martin O’Neill’s first Celtic team back in the 2000’s was “direct”.
Sutton responded to that remark from the Celtic captain: “I couldn’t help but notice McGregor before the Rangers game talking about O’Neill’s first spell at Celtic and saying we liked to go direct.
“I have huge respect for McGregor but he was miles out. Yes, we could go direct, but there was variation in our game. Does he think we lumped the ball up to Lubo Moravcik all the time?
“We could mix it up and that’s exactly what Celtic need right now. They need to find a way, that’s for sure.”
