Celtic's Liam Scales benched for win over Israel as Kasper Hogh features in Denmark vs Wales
Two Celtic players had international games on Sunday night, but only one featured for his nation. Both Liam Scales and Kasper Hogh were in Nations League action, with Ireland facing Israel in Hungary and Denmark welcoming Wales.
The Ireland game was a rather controversial one, and until Saturday it was unclear whether it would be played. There were serious discussions aboyt boycotting the game, which was played in Hungary due to security concerns, and without any formal away ticket allocation for Ireland fans.
Goalkeeper Gavin Baunu, who was linked with Celtic in the summer, did decide to boycott the game, which ended 3-0 to Ireland thanks to goals from Troy Parrott, Adam Idah and Jack Moylan.
Scales was left on the bench for the game, with Celtic bouncing back from their disappointing away defeat to Kosovo. The return fixture with Israel, if it can be called that, will be played in Serbia behind closed doors amid security concerns with Ireland fans, many of whom are firmly against the Israeli government's actions due to the UN-defined genocide of Palestine.
Ireland are next in action against Austria before turning their attention to that second clash with Israel.
Speaking before this win, Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson said: "I'm just saying by playing, we are not accepting what is happening. If a player enters the field tomorrow, he's not accepting or supporting or agreeing to anything that's happened in Gaza. That is a statement.
"We are not playing with, we are playing against. And if I can share the feelings of the players and the question about protecting the players, they feel like they are doing something wrong with playing this game with the pressure from Ireland.
"And that's not a good feeling when you have that pressure from your own people that you want to play for. So we just want to make clear we are not supporting anything that's happening in Gaza,"
Ireland did not shake hands with their opponents before the game, and the Irish players bowed their heads for the Israel anthem.
Elsewhere, Denmark defeated Wales 2-0 at home thanks to a Ben Davies own goal and a Gustav Isaksen goal. Celtic star Hogh came off the bench with three minutes remaining in that game.
Denmark's win sees them bounce back from a defeat to Norway, and it puts them above Norway on goal difference after Portugal defeated Erling Haaland and company on Sunday night.
On Monday night, Benjamin Nygren is in action for Sweden as they take on Poland at home.
