Celtic star Mika Baur looking to break 17 year-old record

It’s terrific news for Baur who has impressed in his short time in the Hoops, and very much looks like a player who has all the attributes required to go far in the game.

Klopp named a large group of 44 players which he split into two separate squads as the newly appointed German manager takes a wider look at the talent he has at his disposal.

Mika Baur is one of nine uncapped players in the squad as Klopp implements several much changes to a Germany side that has suffered something of a concerning decline in recent years in comparison to their usual elite status in international football.

The 22 year old who has one cap for his nation’s under 21 side, wasn’t included in Klopps ‘first’ squad for the Germans recent 1-0 home loss to Greece, as he was named in the former Liverpool managers ‘second’ squad for the upcoming clashes in Serbia in Munich, and Greece in Thessaloniki.

Baur could become the first Celt to play for Germany since Andreas Hinkel

If Mika Baur gets any action in these matches he will be the first Celtic player to represent Germany since 2009. The last Celt to represent the Germans was of course none other than Andreas Hinkel.

Right back Hinkel who was signed from Sevilla by Gordon Strachan back in 2008 made 100 appearances in the Hoops between 2007 and 2010, and won the last of his 21 German caps in a 4-0 win over Azerbaijan in September 2009.

Baur now has the chance to emulate his fellow countryman by becoming a German international whilst wearing the Hoops. Indeed he will become only the second ever player along with Hinkel to have represented the German senior side whilst being a Celtic player.

Marvin Compper played for both Germany and Celtic ONCE

Several Germans have donned the hoops during the clubs illustrious history, but out of all of those on that list only Andreas Thom, and Marvin Compper have won full caps for Germany, but not whilst Celtic players.

Compper played just once for Celtic in the 3-0 Scottish Cup win at Celtic Park over Morton in March 2018.

Let’s hope that Mika wins his first international cap for Germany as that will see him return to Celtic on an incredible high. With Benjamin Nygren scoring for Sweden last night in the win over Poland he too will have a feel good factor about him returning to Lennoxtown ahead of the visit to Fir Park to take on Motherwell a week on Sunday.
