Celtic Academy coach quietly departs but still no update on football operations

Celtic have undergone another change within their academy structure following the departure of Under-19s head coach Adam Asghar.

Asghar left the club last month, although Celtic have yet to formally announce his departure or confirm a permanent successor.

The highly-rated coach arrived at Lennoxtown from Southampton in 2024, initially taking charge of Celtic’s Under-18s before progressing to the Under-19 role.

His coaching career has also included spells with Sunderland and Dundee United, while he recently completed his UEFA Pro Licence alongside Celtic B-team coach Jonny Hayes.

Asghar’s departure has prompted an internal reshuffle within the youth set-up.

Chris Hendry is understood to have assumed responsibility for much of the Under-19s’ day-to-day training, with Celtic’s Head of Academy Coaching, Stevie Hammell, also increasing his involvement with the group.

No permanent replacement has yet been confirmed.

The departure leaves Celtic with another important position to address within their academy as the club continues to assess the structure responsible for developing the next generation of first-team players.

Celtic are still without a Head of Football Operations after Paul Tisdale’s dismissal in January. The former Exeter City manager was sacked alongside Wilfried Nancy but much like the Frenchman, Celtic are yet to replace the two important figureheads at the club.

The club have discussed modernising and revamping structure but as of yet it appears to be mostly hot air. Martin O’Neill mentioned that he had sight of the club’s strategy moving forward during the summer but there has been no indication from the club as to what that contains. Supporters are seeking more transparency and accountability from the Board with a focus on modernising into a forward-thinking football club.
