Brendan Rodgers is hoping Celtic can gain revenge over Aberdeen for last season's Scottish Cup final defeat
  • Aberdeen have not beaten Celtic at Pittodrie since 2016

  • Celtic were 5-1 winners on their most recent visit to the Granite City

  • Recommended bet: Celtic win to nil

Aberdeen and Celtic meet at Pittodrie in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday less than three months after contesting the Scottish Cup final.

It was the Dons who emerged triumphant in that Hampden showpiece, coming through on penalties after a 1-1 draw to seal their first Scottish Cup success since 1990, while the victory also denied Celtic a second domestic treble in the space of three seasons.

The two teams made contrasting starts to the new season last weekend.

The Dons produced a toothless display as they went down 2-0 at Hearts, while Celtic were able to beat St Mirren 1-0 on home turf, although they needed a late Luke McCowan goal to get over the line.

Team news

Dons boss Jimmy Thelin will once again be without summer signings Emmanuel Gyamfi and Kristers Tobers due to injury, although both are believed to be closing in on returns to full fitness.

After lacking a spark in the final third against Hearts, Thelin must decide whether to freshen up his attack or keep faith with new arrivals Kusini Yengi, Adil Aouchiche, and Nicolas Milanovic.

Bhoys manager Brendan Rodgers could hand last week's hero McCowan a start after his matchwinning cameo from the bench, while defender Auston Trusty is expected to replace Kieran Tierney on the left side of defence.

Jota is the Bhoys' only long-term absentee, with the winger not expected to return until the New Year due to a serious cruciate ligament injury.

The stats

Last season's Scottish Cup final success was the first time Aberdeen have beaten Celtic since 2018, while you have to go back to February 2016 for their last victory over the Bhoys at Pittodrie.

Prior to that Hampden loss, Celtic had won four matches on the spin against the Dons, scoring 17 goals and conceding just two, while their last visit to Pittodrie, just 10 days before the cup final, ended in an emphatic 5-1 victory.

The Bhoys boasted the best away record in the Premiership last season, winning 13 of their 19 road fixtures and conceding just 17 goals.

The Dons ended last season by losing just one of their final eight home fixtures, but that sole defeat was the 5-1 thrashing they suffered at the hands of Celtic.

Prediction

It was a major surprise that Aberdeen overcame Celtic in last season's Scottish Cup final, but it is hard to envisage the Dons repeating the trick on Sunday.

The reigning league champions were not at their best as they edged past St Mirren in their Premiership opener last weekend, but they still dominated much of the match, limiting their opponents to just 24% possession and four attempts at goal.

For their part Aberdeen were lacking in defeat at Hearts, mustering just one shot on target and it may take time for Thelin to get the best out of his new attacking line-up.

With revenge in the air, Celtic should win this game and they look primed to do so with the added bonus of keeping a clean sheet.
