Switzerland v Colombia: Diaz set for prominent role in tight battle
By Tom McGarry
World Cup quarter-finals do not come around often for either Switzerland or Colombia, but a place in the last eight will be on the line when they meet in Vancouver in the final match of the round of 16.
The Swiss have reached the quarter-finals of the last two European Championships but they have not broken that ground at a World Cup since they hosted the tournament in 1954. Colombia have advanced to the last eight of the global showpiece only once before, achieving the feat in Brazil 12 years ago, but both sides have been building momentum during their time in North America.
After a slow start which saw them draw 1-1 with Qatar, Switzerland have recorded three successive victories including claiming a first World Cup knockout win in 88 years with their round-of-32 success over Algeria. Murat Yakin's side were good value for their 2-0 triumph over the Algerians and they remain a difficult team to beat, with their only defeat in their last 18 games coming in a friendly against Germany in March, a match where they twice led before going down 4-3.
Losing is not something Colombia are used to, either. They have been beaten in just seven of their 50 internationals since Nestor Lorenzo was appointed head coach in July 2022. Like Switzerland, Los Cafeteros topped their group on seven points, following up wins over Uzbekistan and DR Congo with an impressive goalless draw against a star-studded Portugal.
Colombia then did enough to see off Ghana in the round of 32, but they really should have won by a greater margin than the final 1-0 scoreline. There is no doubt the South Americans boast an abundance of attacking talent, with Luis Diaz, Luis Suarez, Jhon Cordoba and captain James Rodriguez among their forward options, but they have scored just five goals at the tournament, three of which came in their group opener against Uzbekistan.
The relative lack of goals has not been for the want of trying, as following the conclusion of the round of 32 only Belgium (92) had managed more shots than the Colombians' 79. Bayern Munich star Diaz has led the way on that front, firing off 16 in four matches including five against both DR Congo and Ghana and four in the draw with Portugal.
With Cordoba having been forced off injured early in the win over Ghana and Rodriguez withdrawn at half-time after an ineffectual 45 minutes, Diaz will feel even more responsibility to carry the attacking burden. This is a tough match to call and, with both sides believing they are capable of setting up a quarter-final against either defending champions Argentina or Egypt, there may be more than an element of tension. It would not be a surprise if extra time or even penalties were required to decide a winner. Switzerland have exited the last two Euros on spot-kicks while Colombia's last round-of-16 tie at a World Cup, against England in 2018, ended in a shootout defeat.
