Spain v Belgium preview: Red Devils could rattle La Roja's defence
By James Milton
Spain and Belgium reached the World Cup quarter-finals in contrasting styles and they look set for a fascinating clash in Inglewood on Friday. European champions Spain kicked off their campaign with a shock 0-0 draw against Cape Verde - the first of five straight clean sheets for La Roja. They made light work of Austria in the round of 32, winning 3-0 with two goals from in-form striker Mikel Oyarzabal. But Monday's last-16 clash with neighbours Portugal was far tighter.
The Iberian rivals were heading for extra-time until Spain substitute Mikel Merino popped up with an injury-time winner. Spain's unblemished defensive record was threatened in the first half, when Portugal full-back Nuno Mendes hit the crossbar. They are worthy favourites to progress to the semi-finals but Belgium are capable of ending La Roja's run of clean sheets.
The Red Devils made an underwhelming start to the group stage, drawing 1-1 with Egypt thanks to a second-half own goal. Centre-back Nathan Ngoy was sent off in a goalless stalemate with Iran on matchday two but Belgium clicked into gear to thrash New Zealand 5-1 in their final group game. Rudi Garcia's men remain inconsistent and they needed a remarkable comeback to avoid a last-32 exit against Senegal.
Belgium were trailing 2-0 with just four minutes of normal time remaining before goals from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans took the tie to extra-time. A Tielemans penalty in the 124th minute sealed a dramatic 3-2 victory and they made far smoother progress in the round of 16, easing to a 4-1 win over the USA. Backing both teams to score looks a good bet when Belgium take on Spain as the underdogs are far stronger in attack than defence.
Midfielder Amadou Onana is out of the tournament after suffering a knee injury in the last 16, but Garcia's bench against the USA included record goalscorer Lukaku and Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku while Atalanta forward Charles De Ketelaere justified his inclusion with two goals and an assist. Belgium's matches tend to be chaotic and high-scoring, in contrast to Spain's more controlled approach.
The Red Devils scored 29 goals in eight World Cup qualifying matches, including 4-3 and 4-2 wins over group runners-up Wales. Both teams scored in all four of Spain's knockout games at Euro 2024 and last year's Nations League matches were packed with goals. La Roja drew 5-5 on aggregate with the Netherlands in the quarter-finals, beat France 5-4 in the semis and lost on penalties to Portugal after a 2-2 draw in the final.
Lamine Yamal was being nursed back to full fitness at the start of the World Cup but he looked sharp against Portugal and should be backed to punish an unconvincing Belgium defence. Yamal has racked up 17 shots despite his limited playing time at this tournament and he scored his first World Cup goal in the 4-0 group win over Saudi Arabia. That strike should be the first of many for the brilliant teenage winger, who scored 22 goals in just 36 La Liga and Champions League starts for Barca in 2025-26.
