France v Morocco preview: Patient approach should pay off for Les Bleus

France beat Morocco 2-0 in the 2022 World Cup semi-final and the rivals meet again in Thursday's quarter-final in Foxborough. Four years ago, left-back Theo Hernandez put France ahead in the fifth minute but Les Bleus may require more patience this time around. France are clear favourites to win the World Cup, having beaten Senegal 3-1, Iraq 3-0 and Norway 4-1 in the group stage.
They tore Sweden apart in the round of 32, winning 3-0 with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice, but their last-16 tie against Paraguay was far less comfortable. Paraguay's physical approach, helped by a lenient referee, made things difficult for France until Mbappe converted a 70th-minute penalty to seal a 1-0 victory. Back the draw at half-time and France to be winning at full-time looks a good bet on Thursday.
Four of Morocco's five matches at this World Cup have been level at half-time and the exception was their Group C fixture against Scotland. Ismael Saibari gave the Atlas Lions a second-minute lead in that game and the Scots failed to register a shot on target. Saibari, whose transfer from PSV to Bayern Munich was confirmed on July 1, came off injured in the first half of Morocco's last-16 tie against Canada. His likely absence against France is a major blow as Morocco were flattered by the 3-0 scoreline against the tournament co-hosts in Houston.
They had only five shots at Canada's goal and capped their victory with a 97th-minute breakaway goal from Soufiane Rahimi. While there are doubts about Morocco's attacking quality against top-class opponents, they should be hard to break down at the other end of the pitch. The victory over Canada means they are unbeaten in 90 minutes in their last 34 internationals. They were good value for a 1-1 draw with Brazil on matchday one of the group stage. In 2022, Morocco knocked out Spain and Portugal to become the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final. And Mohamed Ouahbi's men upset another European powerhouse in the round of 32, beating the Netherlands on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes.
France, who scored 13 goals in their first four matches at the tournament, showed against Paraguay that they can also grind out victories. Mbappe, Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola should start in attack and coach Didier Deschamps has plenty of potential matchwinners on the bench. He brought on Paris Saint-Germain winger Desire Doue and magical Manchester City playmaker Rayan Cherki against Paraguay. That depth of talent may prove decisive in the second half and there could be a few tired tackles from the Moroccan players. Neil El Aynaoui should be backed to receive a card, having been booked five times in just 992 minutes of playing time for Roma in Serie A. The French-born midfielder has escaped a caution in his first five World Cup appearances despite committing 11 fouls. He averaged 2.1 fouls per 90 minutes in the Italian top flight and may well catch the referee's eye as he attempts to disrupt France's attacking rhythm.
