France v England match preview: Three Lions there for the taking

England fell to defeat in the third-place play-off the last time that they reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2018, and look set for the same fate when they take on France this time around.
The Three Lions took the lead against Argentina on Wednesday but sat deep after Anthony Gordon’s 55th-minute goal, finally being felled by two late goals from the South Americans. Lionel Messi orchestrated the comeback, feeding Enzo Fernandez for the first from range before producing an inch-perfect cross for Lautaro Martinez to head home the winner.
Thomas Tuchel has come in for heavy criticism for making overly defensive substitutions but England were also out on their feet, with the likes of Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane all struggling badly. That doesn’t bode well for this third-place play-off against France and Tuchel is likely to make plenty of changes to freshen things up. His side struggled through extra-time in the heat of Miami against Norway and battled the altitude of the Azteca Stadium against Mexico before that, so changes are needed.
France were also left disappointed after they were shut down by Spain in their semi-final on Tuesday, with La Roja’s midfield preventing the best attacking team at the tournament from getting going at all. France managed just three shots on target as their potent front four became disconnected from the rest of their team, losing 2-0 after Lucas Digne gave away a first-half penalty and Pedro Porro doubled Spain’s lead in the second period.
However, they are unlikely to suffer the same issues against a tired England. France have been the best attacking unit at the tournament, producing 14.65 expected goals, and that spells trouble for an England side who have struggled to keep their opponents out. The Three Lions have conceded six goals in four knockout matches and that is likely to be their undoing once again, particularly if they rotate heavily.
France have a deeper squad than England, especially in attacking areas, and the likes of Rayan Cherki and Jean-Philippe Mateta can make the most of their chance. Les Bleus have also dominated recent meetings between these teams, winning six of the last nine head-to-heads. They also put the Three Lions out at the last World Cup, beating them 2-1 in the quarter-finals en route to finishing as runners-up in Qatar.
A friendly victory in 2015 is England’s only win in that run and they face a seriously tough task to add to that tally. Side with France to win this one and end Didier Deschamps’ 14-year career as manager on a high.
Cherki is likely to get an opportunity to start, and the Manchester City maverick is fancied to score or assist. He scored ten goals for his club side in the 2025-26 season and chipped in with an impressive 15 assists. He has had to watch the World Cup from the bench for the most part, but should make his mark on this clash.
