Colombia v Ghana: Patience will be key for South Americans
By James Mason Colombia impressed during the group stage and they will be eager to push on in the final match of the round of 32 against Ghana.
Colombia entered the tournament following friendly wins over Costa Rica and Jordan and they kept the impetus going with a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in their opening match in Group K. A hard-fought 1-0 success against DR Congo made it six points from their first two matches before a 0-0 draw against Portugal ensured they progressed as section winners for their third World Cup appearance in a row.
Los Cafeteros have plenty of attacking talent to call upon in Luis Diaz, James Rodriguez, Luis Suarez and Jhon Arias, but Nestor Lorenzo’s side have had to be patient when coming up against teams who are happy to sit in and defend. A defensive approach nearly worked for DR Congo, who were beaten by a solitary goal, but Colombia’s quality shone through in the end and they may need to show that resolve once more to see off Ghana.
The Black Stars scored just twice in the group stage, in a 1-0 win over Panama and 2-1 defeat to Croatia, while they managed to hold England to a goalless draw with a resolute defensive performance. Head coach Carlos Queiroz, who has been in charge for just five matches, has never been an adventurous head coach so it is perhaps no surprise that all but one of his games at the helm have featured no more than two goals.
Ghana work hard and are physical without the ball, which often detracts from attacking football and makes contests more of an arm wrestle, and they were level at half-time in two of their three group games. In fact, the defeat to Croatia was the first time in four matches that Ghana have found themselves behind at the break, so they clearly know how to frustrate opponents.
Colombia’s patience has already been tested at the World Cup as they have been level in their last two matches against DR Congo and Portugal, while it took a 40th-minute goal from Daniel Munoz to ensure they went in ahead against Uzbekistan. With three of Colombia’s goals at this tournament coming in the second half, backing them to be level at half-time before going on to win looks like a solid play.
Ghana’s lack of cutting edge also makes a Colombia win to nil an appealing selection, especially as it has landed in two of the South Americans' last four matches. A 95th-minute winner was required for Ghana to beat Panama in their opener, while they lacked any real threat in the stalemate against England and scored with their only shot on target in the loss to Croatia.
With Colombia keeping two clean sheets in a row, they look defensively sound and can record a shutout win to set up a last-16 tie against either Switzerland or Algeria.
