Australia v Egypt: Pharaohs can create more history

By Tom Clark

Australia's reward for reaching the knockout stages is a difficult meeting with an Egypt side who have already created history at the tournament by winning a World Cup match for the first time in their history.

The Socceroos confounded pre-tournament expectations to finish second in Group D, but they did so without showing much in the way of attacking adventure.

Tony Popovic's side opened with an impressive 2-0 victory over Turkey, before losing to the USA in disappointing style and then playing out a mutually beneficial goalless draw with Paraguay to secure qualification. Australia deserve enormous credit for reaching the round of 32, but their underlying numbers suggest they will struggle against stronger opposition.

They managed just 11 shots on target across their three group matches and created very little in their defeat to the USA or stalemate with Paraguay, relying heavily on defensive organisation and discipline. Egypt, meanwhile, quietly pieced together an impressive unbeaten group campaign. Hossam Hassan's side held Belgium to a deserved 1-1 draw, comfortably defeated New Zealand 3-1 before another hard-fought draw against Iran sealed second place in Group G.

While Mohamed Salah remains Egypt's headline act, the Pharaohs are far from a one-man team. Omar Marmoush gives them genuine pace, especially on the counter, and creativity alongside their captain. The pair combined brilliantly in the victory over New Zealand and look capable of causing Australia plenty of problems if Salah is deemed fit after an injury scare against Iran.

Egypt's performance against Belgium perhaps offered the strongest indication of their credentials. They matched one of Europe's leading nations throughout, registering 14 attempts on goal and showing they can compete with elite opposition while remaining compact without the ball.

Australia are unlikely to offer Egypt as much attacking threat as Belgium did. The Socceroos commanded just 28 per cent possession in their victory over Turkey and were fortunate to survive after allowing 30 shots. A more clinical side would have won.

Nestory Irankunda has been Australia's brightest attacking spark while midfielder Connor Metcalfe was also on the scoresheet against Turkey, but the Socceroos have failed to score since their opening win. Breaking down Egypt's disciplined defence represents another significant step up in class.

The tactical battle also points towards a low-scoring affair. Australia are comfortable sitting deep and frustrating opponents before looking to counter, while Egypt have shown patience in possession and rarely overcommit bodies forward. Neither side is likely to take unnecessary risks with a place in the last 16 at stake.

There has been some concern over Salah's fitness after he was withdrawn early against Iran, but the extra recovery time before this fixture should ensure the former Liverpool forward is fresh enough to lead Egypt's attack. Australia have never won a World Cup knockout match and while they will once again prove difficult to break down, Egypt possess the greater quality in the final third.

In a game where chances could be limited, that difference may ultimately be the difference. But that’s not all – LiveScore Bet is also offering a money-back as a free bet on all England games if your bet builder (placed with cash) loses.
