Sometimes you have to ride your luck at a World Cup and defending champions Argentina are firmly in the saddle after two lucky escapes in the knockout rounds.
The Albiceleste cruised through Group J with three victories but were taken to extra time in the round of 32 by finals debutants Cape Verde, who they eventually beat 3-2. They then came from 2-0 down to defeat Egypt by the same scoreline, this time in regulation time but in controversial circumstances.
Lionel Scaloni's men have not been that impressive, but that does not matter in tournament football which is all about the end result. And they are again fancied to find a way to win in Sunday's quarter-final against Switzerland. The Swiss opened up with a 1-1 draw against Qatar but then beat Bosnia-Herzegovina and co-host Canada to win Group B.
A 2-0 defeat of Algeria followed in the first knockout round but their last-16 clash with Colombia provided the Swiss with a step up in the quality of their opposition. However, Murat Yakin's side again prevailed, this time on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in Vancouver. Their reward is a first quarter-final since 1954, and those with decent memories may remember the last-16 game between Argentina and Switzerland at the 2014 World Cup, when a tense match in Sao Paulo was settled by Angel Di Maria in the 118th minute.
Argentina went on to lose the final to Germany without the injured Di Maria, but eight years later in Qatar they got their hands on the World Cup for the third time. Argentina's knockout campaign has already featured several close calls, having overcome an inspired Cape Verde and an Egyptian team who felt they were on the wrong end of several refereeing calls.
As was the case against Austria in the group stage, Messi missed from the penalty spot in the last-16 win over Egypt. He has now missed four penalties across the six World Cups he has played in, but he recovered in trademark fashion to inspire Argentina's comeback in Atlanta.
With Argentina 2-0 down and staring elimination in the face, Messi provided the cross for Cristian Romero to head home in the 79th minute before lashing home an equaliser four minutes later. Messi has now scored eight times at the tournament and extended his record as the World Cup's leading scorer to 21 goals, two ahead of Kylian Mbappe, who leads France in their last-eight meeting with Morocco on Thursday.
Messi looks unstoppable but Argentina's defence has been anything but. Indeed, it is a mystery to those who watched their win over Egypt how Romero, Lisandro Martinez and Nicolas Tagliafico escaped a booking. The reaction in South America to Switzerland's shootout success over Colombia suggests Lady Luck has again shone on Argentina, who gained only one point from their two matches against Colombia in qualifying and were taken to extra time by Los Cafeteros in the final of the last Copa America.
They will still need to be wary of a Switzerland side who have lost only one of their last 19 matches, but the likely absence of breakout star Johan Manzambi is a blow to the European nation's aspirations. Manzambi has scored three times at his first major tournament but he missed the win over Colombia after suffering a knee injury in training. He is again doubtful for Sunday's fixture.
That is another lucky break for Argentina and with Messi's brilliance showing no sign of abating, the world champions can continue their title defence in Kansas City.
