The 2026 World Cup final promises a contrast in styles as the competition's best defence, Spain, faces off against the highest-scoring team, Argentina.
After being held to a shock goalless draw by Cape Verde in their group opener, Spain have never panicked and have improved with every game to progress through to their first World Cup final since 2010. Luis de la Fuente's side were pushed hard by Portugal and Belgium in the knockout stages, relying on late Mikel Merino goals in both games to come through, but they will have been surprised just how comfortable their semi-final victory over France was.
A first-half Mikel Oyarzabal penalty and a Pedro Porro strike 13 minutes after the restart sealed Spain's place in Sunday's final and they managed to keep France at arm's length throughout, facing just three shots on target and allowing Kylian Mbappe and co an expected-goals figure of only 0.3. Defensive resilience has been key to Spain's progress as they have conceded only once at the finals - an equalising goal from Belgium's Charles De Ketelaere in the quarter-finals.
La Roja are happy to control proceedings through possession-based football, which is a contributing factor to why their tally of 12 goals scored is considerably lower than any of the other teams to reach the semi-finals. A pragmatic approach has helped Spain not only at this tournament, but throughout De La Fuente's tenure too. They are unbeaten in 37 matches (setting aside penalty shootouts) since a friendly loss to Colombia in March 2024 and have lost only two of 48 games under the 65-year-old.
That underlines the task awaiting Argentina in the final, but the defending champions may feel their name is destined to be engraved on the trophy once more given their spectacular route through the knockout stages. Lionel Scaloni's side needed extra time to see off Spain's disruptors, Cape Verde, in the round of 32, before coming from 2-0 down to beat Egypt 3-2.
Another extra-time period was required to get the better of Switzerland in the quarter-finals before late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez sealed a sensational comeback win over England in the last four. Lionel Messi was the architect of that semi-final comeback, assisting both strikes, and the Inter Miami star now has 12 goal involvements at this World Cup.
The 39-year-old keeps on breaking records and is battling it out with Mbappe for the Golden Boot, but his main focus is on helping Argentina become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to defend the World Cup. However, England sat far too deep and allowed Messi to dictate play during the latter stages of their semi-final and Argentina made hard work of seeing off their other three knockout-stage opponents, all of whom they would have expected to get the better of a lot more comfortably.
Spain showed against France that they can stifle even the very best attacks and, in this battle of contrasting styles, it may be La Roja that are celebrating come the final whistle. Do not rule out Messi having a say, though. He is the World Cup's record scorer and netted two in the 2022 final against France.
Messi should play his part but, this time, it may not be enough for Argentina to get their hands on the trophy.
