Argentina v Cape Verde: Blue Sharks have entered deeper waters
By Tom McGarry Few pundits expected Cape Verde to make it into the knockout rounds on their World Cup debut but their fairytale run looks set to meet its end in Miami on Friday.
The Blue Sharks have been one of the stories of the tournament. Despite being a nation of only 525,000 inhabitants, Cape Verde came through their group unbeaten after drawing with European champions Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
Bubista's team are the first African nation to reach the World Cup knockout stages on debut since Ghana 20 years ago, but the task awaiting them in the round of 32 could not be much tougher. Reigning world champions Argentina were imperious in the group stage, scoring eight goals and conceding only once as they recorded comprehensive victories over Algeria, Austria and Jordan.
Captain marvel Lionel Messi has once again been the star of the show for La Albiceleste, opening the tournament with a hat-trick against Algeria. Messi followed that up with both goals in a 2-0 win over Austria before coming off the bench to net a trademark free-kick against Jordan, a match where he had been left out of the starting line-up by head coach Lionel Scaloni, who had one eye on the knockout stages.

That's not to say Argentina are a one-man band. Trying to keep Messi quiet is clearly central to any game plan Argentina's opponents draw up, but Cape Verde must also keep a close eye on stars such as Lautaro Martinez, Julian Alvarez and Thiago Almada. The island nation shut out a star-studded Spain attack in their opening match of the tournament, while they also kept a clean sheet against Saudi Arabia.
Indeed, Cape Verde have lost only one of their last 16 internationals inside 90 minutes – a run that dates back to November 2024 – but they will need another inspired performance from 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, who saved everything that came his way against Spain, to have any chance of thwarting the Argentina onslaught.
Bubista's side rarely come up against a team of the world champions' quality, and while they benefited from Spain being slow into gear at the start of the group stage, there is no chance that Argentina will be as sloppy with three group wins already behind them.
Scaloni's side have won their last ten matches, conceding only twice during that run, and it is hard to see them having much to worry about defensively given Cape Verde failed to score in two of their three group games. The debutants have shown they can frustrate, so this may not be a rout, but with the ageless Messi continuing to provide brilliant moment after brilliant moment, the last 16 beckons for the defending champions.
