Manchester United are reportedly tracking Ivan Toney and Jean-Philippe Mateta, who could become options should Joshua Zirkzee leave.

Although we’re less than two weeks away from the end of the summer transfer window, Zirkzee’s future remains unclear.

The Dutchman is considering a mere back-up for Benjamin Sesko, and even with the Slovenian’s absence, Michael Carrick could still opt to deploy either Matheus Cunha or Bryan Mbeumo in the striker role.

For the past 18 months or so, Zirkzee has been linked with a return to Italian football. Last January, Roma were close to signing the 25-year-old, but in recent weeks, Juventus emerged as the player’s most likely destination, which isn’t a total coincidence, given how former Roma director Ricky Massara moved to Turin earlier this summer.

Moreover, Napoli are said to be considered a late-summer target for Zirkzee after selling Romelu Lukaku. This would reunite the former Bologna star with fellow Man Utd struggler Rasmus Hojlund, who managed to revive his career in Southern Italy.

According to reliable Carrington insider Sully, United would recruit a new centre-forward if they end up parting ways with the Netherlands international.

The journalist believes the management would seek an experienced striker on a cost-efficient deal, identifying Mateta and Toney as the main targets.

Mateta is a 29-year-old French international who established himself as a key player for Crystal Palace since joining the club in 2022.

On the other hand, Toney rose to prominence during his time at Brentford, earning himself a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League in 2024.

Should Man Utd replace Zirkzee with Toney or Mateta?

In Sesko, United have a classic No.9 who excels as a target man. Therefore, one would imagine that Zirkzee should be the ideal foil.

With his elusive technique and unorthodox style, the Dutchman offers something different and is able to coexist with Sesko in the same lineup when required.

Nevertheless, Carrick doesn’t seem to admire Zirkzee’s skill set, hence why a separation could be for the best.

When it comes to Toney and Mateta, they are both considered traditional centre-forwards who should be able to mentor Sesko while offering him healthy competition.

The Englishman has been a goal machine for Al-Ahli, bagging 40 strikes last season. The 30-year-old was also prolific for Brentford.

Likewise, Mateta has been a reliable presence in attack for Palace, and he feels it is past time for him to make a step up in competition.

The 29-year-old Frenchman should be more affordable than Toney, who is enjoying the Saudi riches. It should also be noted that Mateta’s contract will expire next June, so he could be available at a discount.
