"You cannot allow that to happen": Schmeichel attacks Manchester United trio
Peter Schmeichel has taken aim at three Manchester United players over their roles in the disastrous opening-round defeat to Hull City.
All the optimism of pre-season evaporated in just 38 minutes. The newly promoted side raced into a 2-0 lead against Manchester City through goals from Semi Ajayi and Noble Mendy.
United were in chaos for Hull's first goal, losing the battle for the first ball in the move that earned the corner.
Dorgu let the delivery pass in front of him as the corner came in, while Heaven failed to get close enough to McBurnie, who steered the ball goalwards.
Analysing the goal at half-time, Schmeichel laid into Dorgu for "not watching the ball" and insisted Heaven should have dealt with the Hull attacker more firmly.
The Metro quoted the Manchester United legend on Premier League Productions, where he said: "Look at Dorgu at the near post, he is not even looking at the player taking the corner kick."
The former goalkeeper added: "In that specific moment, he loses his focus, and does not have the ability to clear the first ball."
Turning to Ayden Heaven, who was stationed at the far post, he continued: "He allowed McBurnie to get in behind him. You cannot allow that to happen. This is not how you defend. You have to be stronger."
The second goal drew Schmeichel's ire too. As the free kick was taken and both sets of players jostled for position inside the box, Luke Shaw inexplicably dropped back, keeping the Hull players onside and wrecking the offside trap.
Schmeichel said after the final whistle: "It is a complete lack of focus on Manchester United's part. This is the thing that disappoints me the most."
He added: "I focused on Luke Shaw. He was two metres behind the rest of the players, and he kept everyone onside."
He went on: "He should not have been in that place. He was fooled by the dummy. Had he stayed in his position, the players would have been offside, or the ball would have gone out to become a goal kick."
Schmeichel concluded: "What is disappointing for me is that a team with this experience makes mistakes of this kind."
