Brighton broke their transfer record to sign Luka Vušković – and early signs suggest it was money well spent.

Fabian Hürzeler’s outfit paid £46 million to secure the Croatian centre-back’s services from Tottenham in July, following Jan Paul van Hecke’s move in the opposite direction.

Committing such a significant outlay on a player yet to feature in the Premier League was undoubtedly a risk, but the Seagulls are already being rewarded for their conviction.

Vušković has taken to life on the South Coast like a duck to water, excelling across his first three top-flight appearances for the club.

And the 19-year-old’s impact was particularly pronounced on Saturday, as he got on the scoresheet in a 1-1 home draw with Leeds United.

As Brighton prepare to fight on four fronts in 2026/27, here’s why Vušković will be key to the Sussex side’s chances of a successful season.

Up and running

Vušković built a reputation as a goalscoring defender while on loan at Hamburger SV from Tottenham last term, scoring six times across 28 Bundesliga appearances.

That represented a remarkable return for a centre-back, averaging out at 0.22 goals per 90 minutes of action.

The Split native is clearly intent on continuing that record in England – leaping to head home a second-half equaliser at the back post against Leeds, following Maxim De Cuyper’s right-sided corner.

It was a goal reminiscent of his time at the Volksparkstadion. Four of Vušković league strikes in 2025/26 came from set pieces, though only two of them were headers.

Saturday’s effort at the Amex Stadium took his total since the beginning of last season to seven, which is more than any other central defenders in England, Spain, Italy, Germany or France.

Expect plenty more where that came from as the current campaign progresses.

Defensively dominant

Brighton boss Hürzeler will have been disappointed to see his team concede five goals across their last two games – leaking four in a 4-3 defeat to Chelsea before allowing Leeds to go ahead last time out.

But it shouldn’t be forgotten that the Seagulls started the season in fine defensive form, registering three consecutive clean sheets across domestic and continental matches.

They progressed past Tromsø in the Conference League play-off round without their rearguard being breached (4-0 on aggregate) and beat Aston Villa 4-0 during the Premier League’s opening round.

Vušković has shown signs of the defensive domination that we witnessed from him in Germany, winning ten aerial duels over his three top-flight outings to date.

That puts him just outside the top ten performers in the division for that metric, with only six centre-backs managing a higher number.

There is still some way to go before he matches the outstanding figures he was posting in 2025/26, though.

After all, the Croatia international ranked inside the Bundesliga’s top three players for everything from clearances completed (251) and headed clearances (153) to aerial duels won (149).

However, Hürzeler has acknowledged that Vušković is still a work in progress.

“What he [Vušković] has is the physicality to quickly adapt to the Premier League,” he said, following the Leeds match.

“But definitely we shouldn’t underestimate he’s a really, really young boy. For his young age, he plays very mature and he definitely adapts quick.

“He still has moments – similar to the whole team performance – where he switches off a little bit, moments where he’s not 100% into the game, moments where he also has a lack of experience, but this will come over time.

“He played his third Premier League match, he played against a striker [in Calvert-Lewin] who is so experienced.

“That’s definitely something he will learn from and the Premier League will educate him. We try to help, we try to give him support, and then he can be a top player.”

Wonderkid Watch

Hürzeler was quick to focus on Vušković’s physicality after his goalscoring display at the Amex Stadium – and our Wonderkid Watch rankings have also highlighted those attributes.

In case you missed it, Wonderkid Watch is LiveScore’s brand-new statistical ratings system, which assesses the Premier League’s brightest young stars based on more than 40 different metrics per position.

There are a whole host of factors that contribute to this one-of-a-kind matrix, so the best way of getting to grips with it all is to check out our handy explainer article here.

Notably, Vušković was the highest ranked player now plying his trade in England, when we ran the numbers in Europe’s top five leagues for 2025/26.

His Overall Score of 9.04 was only bettered by one other player across the continent, with Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal leading the way on 9.40.

They were the only two hot prospects to receive an ‘outstanding’ rating for breaching the 9.0 mark, while Vušković was also the highest-rated centre-back in our Positional Index (8.6).

All of the above saw Brighton’s No.44 allocated an ‘Aerial Dominance’ specialist profile, which shouldn’t be too much of a surprise given his aforementioned defensive numbers.

But it would be remiss not to highlight the 6ft 4in star’s on-the-ball attributes, which have also been evident since his arrival in Falmer.

Vušković has enjoyed more touches (307) than all but four Premier League players, for example, though that will of course be influenced by Brighton’s possession-focused style.

He also ranks sixth for completed passes at 242, which represents a healthy percentage of the 261 passes he has attempted over 270 minutes.

With distribution skills, defensive dominance and goalscoring threat in abundance, the future certainly looks bright for the Seagulls’ big-money summer signing.
