Patrick Vieira has revealed he came close to leaving Arsenal for Manchester United during his playing career, disclosing that he sat down with Sir Alex Ferguson to discuss a possible switch before ultimately staying in north London.

What Ferguson wanted from Vieira

Vieira said Ferguson explained the team he wanted to build around him, pairing him alongside Roy Keane in midfield with Ryan Giggs and David Beckham providing width and Paul Scholes operating just behind Ruud van Nistelrooy. It was, by any measure, a formidable blueprint for a United side already stacked with silverware.

Vieira ultimately turned it down, saying he felt too settled at Arsenal and believed the club was building something genuinely special. That decision paid off: he arrived at Highbury in 1996, won three Premier League titles, and captained the Invincibles side of 2003-04 that went the entire league campaign unbeaten.
