Who will be on Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle United Mount Rushmore?

It might be a little premature to start thinking about who will define the Matthias Jaissle era at Newcastle United. After all, the German has only just begun his time as the Magpies’ gaffer.

But if this is to become the era Newcastle United hope it can be, there will no doubt be a strong cohort of players who become synonymous with his tenure on Tyneside.

So, with that being said, here we take a look at who could be on Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle United Mount Rushmore once his time at the club blossoms.

Lewis Hall - The cornerstone

Lewis Hall is the main man Newcastle United should be looking to build this Matthias Jaissle era around, there’s no debating that.

He has all of the attributes to absolutely explode in Jaissle’s system, something we have already been more than privy to thus far courtesy of his top drawer performances.

The Magpies have one of the world’s top left-backs on their books and he has already cited part of his reasoning for signing that bumper new contract is because of his belief in the manager.

I don’t think anyone can dispute that Hall is going on to the biggest of big things, whether that be at Newcastle or elsewhere is yet to be seen despite the new contract, which is perhaps why there is jeopardy in this pick.

But, if Jaissle is to build a dynasty on Tyneside, Lewis Hall is likely to be remembered as one of the most integral members of his tenure.

Nico Gonzalez - The talisman

Every project needs a talisman.

The previous iteration of Newcastle United under Eddie Howe had Bruno Guimaraes. This one has Nico Gonzalez.

When Nico was linked with us toward the back end of the window, I’m not sure anybody actually thought it was really possible. A man brought in to be the successor to Ballon d’Or winner Rodri at Man City and a man who completely changed the game that broke all of our hearts when Spain beat England in the Euros final.

’Newcastle 2.0’ needed a statement signing, and Nico Gonzalez showed a strong desire to be that man. Now, the club have a player on their hands with big pedigree and even bigger talent.

Harvey Barnes - The reborn player

Harvey Barnes was never the main guy under Eddie Howe, not even in his own position.

Anthony Gordon was first choice and Barnes was often either stuck in an unfavoured position on the right-wing or left on the bench, even when in top form.

Now, he is the first choice and the one that Jaissle trusts to provide the goods and, thus far, Barnes is doing that.

There is still more work to do for the 28-year-old, and there are Newcastle fans who don’t believe he is good enough even with his exceptional levels of goalscoring.

But that’s precisely why he’s here, he’s got the chance to genuinely become a cornerstone of this period under Matthias Jaissle and I’m backing him to do it.

Lewis Miley - The local lad

This was a toss-up between Miley and Sean Steur, for many of the same reasons but also a few very different ones. The decision to pick Miley mainly stemmed from the fact he is a local lad, living the dream and all of the Newcastle fans are desperate for him to succeed.

Matthias Jaissle has also already spoken openly about how much he loves Miley, it’s just now about the young midfielder stepping up to the expectation everyone has for him and really kicking on with a regular place in the side.

Miley will end up with cult-hero status anyway purely for his roots and heritage, but it feels like he has the opportunity to become so much more than that and really become a defining face in this current era of Newcastle United.
