‘We need the players that are in the best situation to play’ – Alonso expands on Enzo Fernandez absence amid Man City links
Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso has explained that Enzo Fernandez was left out of the squad for their Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town after discussions over the midfielder’s readiness to play.
Fernandez was absent as Chelsea progressed to the next round with victory over Luton, with Alonso insisting the decision was made based on the player’s current situation.
The Argentine is a target for Manchester City, who are believed to be readying a bid for the midfielder.
“I’ve said that we need the players that are in the best situation to play and we need to take everything into consideration,” Alonso said.
“Players that are in good moments, players that are not feeling that energy to play.
“For me, it’s very important that they feel this desire to play and to have good preparation.
“We talked and we decided that for tonight it was better not to be part of the squad.
“But he’s a top player. There’s no doubt about it.”
