Wan-Bissaka agrees Aston Villa loan with mandatory buy clause
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is set to leave West Ham for Aston Villa, with the 28-year-old former Manchester United right-back agreeing to a loan deal that includes a mandatory buy clause.
Italian transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirmed on X that Villa have agreed a deal with West Ham for Wan-Bissaka, describing it as a loan with a mandatory buy clause and stating there is agreement between all parties. Romano added that the player has given the green light to the Villa project and that a medical has also been given the go-ahead, though the move has not yet been formally completed.
A familiar face returning to the Premier League
Wan-Bissaka needs little introduction to United supporters. He joined from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2019 and went on to make 190 appearances for the Reds across five seasons, scoring twice and establishing himself as a regular starter under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, most notably during the 2020-21 campaign when he featured in 54 matches.
His spell at Old Trafford came to an end under Erik ten Hag once he lost his place in the starting XI, prompting a move to West Ham. He went on to make 65 appearances for the Hammers, scoring twice, but his future at the club was thrown into doubt after their relegation from the Premier League last season.
Form for Congo and the road to Villa Park
Wan-Bissaka’s stock rose again after an impressive World Cup showing for Congo, where he was particularly effective against England and his former United teammate Marcus Rashford. That form saw him linked with a host of Premier League clubs, including champions Arsenal, before Villa moved to secure his signature.
Should the move go through in the coming days, Wan-Bissaka will have the chance to play Champions League football again. It remains to be seen how quickly he can force his way into Unai Emery’s starting XI once the paperwork is finalised.
Manchester United’s own right-back plans continue to take shape as the position remains a live talking point at Old Trafford this summer.
