Manchester City edged a thrilling Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Sunday, beating their hosts by a single goal in the fourth round of the English Premier League.

Erling Haaland struck the winner on the hour mark, the Norway striker pouncing on a cross inside the six-yard box.

City climbed to 12 points and second place, level on goal difference with leaders Arsenal. United, meanwhile, stayed stuck on 4 points in 13th.

Remarkably, City managed all of this a man down. Phil Foden had seen a straight red in the 23rd minute.

Refereeing controversy in the Manchester derby

Controversy shadowed the whole afternoon, and it started with that Foden dismissal. Bruno Fernandes and Foden collided, the City man went to ground, then kicked out at the United captain. Michael Oliver judged it a straight red.

Oliver showed no hesitation. Out came the card, and City faced the rest of the derby with ten men from the 23rd minute, a brutal blow for a side that had just lost one of its sharpest attacking weapons.

Enzo Maresca protested furiously on the touchline, the City manager venting his anger at the decision. Yet he made no changes after the red card, keeping his players on the pitch until the break.

Haaland's goal reignited the row. Joško Gvardiol whipped in a cross that reached the Norwegian, who buried it, but the linesman's flag went up for offside. Oliver initially chalked it off before VAR stepped in to review the incident.

The replays changed everything. Gvardiol's cross had struck the foot of Patrick Dorgu before reaching Haaland, who was indeed offside when the ball came in. Dorgu's touch, though, started a new phase of play, and Oliver awarded the goal to Manchester City.
