“Urgency in January” – Jacobs tells Man Utd fans what to expect in next transfer window
Manchester United are expected to be busy in January after failing to address some of their squad issues in the summer.
The Premier League giants made four first-team signings this summer. As expected, they pulled off a major midfield overhaul, buying Andrey Santos from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, and Carlos Baleba from Brighton.
Aside from the middle of the park, they only recruited free agent Karl Darlow as a backup for first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Following Baleba’s arrival, United fans would have been satisfied with the signing of a new left-back who can take some of the burden off Luke Shaw’s shoulders, plus a new centre-forward, since Joshua Zirkzee hasn’t earned Michael Carrick’s trust.
But after giving up Lewis Hall, INEOS didn’t make a serious attempt to sign any other left-back.
Although they enquired about Alejandro Balde and Rayan Ait-Nouri, they didn’t want to commit to either player, only offering loan deals.
United preferred to reserve their funds for next summer, as they intend to launch a new onslaught for Hall, hoping to find a more positive response from Newcastle.
But according to British journalist Ben Jacobs, United won’t be sitting idle in January. The transfer market expert believes INEOS will want to start their 2027 business rather early, first to bolster Michael Carrick’s squad for the decisive half of the season, and second to avoid an overwhelming summer campaign.
“For Manchester United, I think they’re going to have urgency in January,” said Jacobs during his latest appearance on The United Stand.
“If they don’t move in January and they leave everything until the summer, that could have a really detrimental knock-on effect on the second half of this season.”
Should Man Utd fans be optimistic about January?
After the deadline-day disappointment, a large section of the fanbase has been calling for the heads of the club’s senior officials.
So at this stage, most supporters would find it hard to believe that INEOS would deliver the goods in the middle of the season.

Last January, the fans promised themselves Antoine Semenyo, a player who Ruben Amorim vigorously wanted at the club, but the Ghanaian ended up signing for their crosstown rivals, Manchester City.
Moreover, if MUFC are still keen to wait for Hall’s potential availability next summer, it would be difficult to imagine them buying a stopgap solution for a few months.
Nevertheless, many things can change between now and then, and the rather thin squad could be a few injuries away from an emergency situation. In that case, January signings won’t be a luxury, but an utter necessity.
